ACA & Marketplace basics.

The Health Insurance Marketplace is where individuals and families who don't get coverage through an employer or government program can compare and enroll in private health plans.

Who it's for

Self-employed people, small business owners, early retirees, and anyone between jobs or without employer coverage can typically shop the Marketplace.

Metal tiers

Marketplace plans are grouped into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers. The tier doesn't describe quality of care — it describes how costs are split between your monthly premium and what you pay when you use care. Bronze plans generally have lower premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs; Platinum is the reverse.

Premium tax credits

Depending on household income and size, you may qualify for a subsidy that lowers your monthly premium. Whether you qualify, and by how much, depends on your specific numbers each year.

Open enrollment vs. special enrollment

Marketplace plans generally have an annual open enrollment window. Outside that window, you may still be able to enroll if you have a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, or a change in household.

Tier ≠ quality.Metal tiers describe cost-sharing structure, not the quality of doctors or hospitals in the plan.
Subsidies are individual. Two households with different incomes can pay very different premiums for the same plan.
Timing matters.Missing open enrollment without a qualifying event can mean waiting until the next window.
